"When I looked at the painting I felt the same convergence on a single point: a glancing sun-struck instance that existed now and forever. Only occasionally did I notice the chain on the finch’s ankle, or think what a cruel life for a little living creature - fluttering briefly, forced always to land in the same hopeless place."

From ‘The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt

Miner’s family at Scott’s Run, West Virginia, photographed by Lewis Hine, 1937.

"This picture was taken at the natural supper hour. The man is a mine mechanic who installed all kinds of machinery. At first he refused to be photographed and cursed us and the government and the coal operators as being entertained by his minery. As we talked to him he showed us six statements which he held in five different bankrupt mines on Scott’s Run. He had not been paid his last pay in any bankruptcy."

This photo of Marilyn Monroe visiting Mexico in 1962 inspired the cover of my novel, ‘The Mmm Girl',and I still love the warmth, innocence and hopefulness in Marilyn's eyes, as if to say - “Cheers, no tears…”
